How many flooring boxes for a 12 m² room?
A 12 m² room does not have one universal box count. This example uses a 4 × 3 m room, 90 × 15 cm planks, 24 pieces per box and RoomQuanta's one-third stagger layout. These are demonstration dimensions, not a standard specification for all flooring.
1. Check the exact specification
Each plank covers 0.9 × 0.15 = 0.135 m². A box of 24 contains 3.24 m² of material. Convert millimetres to centimetres before entering a product specification: 914.4 mm = 91.44 cm.
2. Area gives a theoretical starting point
12 ÷ 0.135 ≈ 88.89, or 89 whole planks before reserve. This assumes all material area is usable. It does not check whether an offcut has the length, width and orientation needed somewhere else.
3. Compare the same laying plan
| Method | Before reserve | With 7% | Boxes with 7% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Area only | 89 planks | 96 planks | 4 boxes |
| Layout, no offcut reuse | 107 planks | 115 planks | 5 boxes |
| Layout, with offcut reuse | 90 planks | 97 planks | 5 boxes |
The layout methods apply 7% to the stock count and round up. 90 × 1.07 = 96.3 becomes 97 planks. Four boxes contain only 96 planks, so buying full boxes requires five. Reuse can reduce planks consumed without reducing boxes purchased.
4. Try your room
- Choose “Rectangle” and edit the drawing dimensions to 4 m and 3 m.
- Set 90 × 15 cm planks, 24 per box, 7% reserve and “Stagger ⅓”.
- Toggle “Optimize material” and open the cutting plan to see where remnants go.
- Enter the box price and currency for the full-box material cost.
The 7% reserve is an example, not an installation standard. Reuse assumes adhesive planks that can be cut freely, without saw kerf or locking-edge requirements. Check the actual product instructions before purchasing.
