How to measure an L-shaped or irregular room
Multiplying the maximum length and width of an L-shaped or diagonal room counts space that may not exist. An accurate outline also helps identify the cut planks along the room edges.
Record measurements around the outline
Sketch the boundary and number the corners. Measure each edge and the connecting distances that locate recessed corners. Edge lengths alone may not determine a diagonal shape; measure diagonals or locate corners relative to two reference edges. Do not assume every corner is a right angle.
A 14 m² L-shaped example
A 4 × 3 m main section with a 2 × 1 m extension covers 12 + 2 = 14 m². Its 6 × 3 m bounding rectangle covers 18 m², including a missing 2 × 2 m corner. Using the bounding rectangle overestimates the room by 4 m² before reserve.
Draw it in RoomQuanta
- Choose “Draw your own” and create an initial shape in the 2D view.
- Select a corner and use the add-corner button on the left to form the recess or extension.
- Drag corners into place and edit the drawing's dimension labels.
- Check the total area and switch to 3D to review the outline.
Edges must not cross themselves and area sections must not overlap. Undo restores an accidental move. Curves, internal holes and furniture footprints are not modeled.
Cross-check before ordering
Check overall dimensions as well as each branch. Repeat measurements where walls are not parallel. Difficult angles and diagonal walls need careful measurement beyond a rough sketch. Review the cutting plan after changing plank size or laying pattern: equal floor areas can require different plank counts.
